Nicotine pouches
Small, white, tobacco-free pouches — the fabric contains nicotine, flavour, plant fibres and sweeteners. You place one under your upper lip; it releases nicotine through the gum for 30–60 minutes. No smoke, no spit, no smell. Brands: ZYN, CLEW, VELO.
Best for: anyone who wants discretion and no smoke — pouches are the format most existing nicotine users switch to when they want something they can use in offices, flights, restaurants and cars without smoke or smell.
Cigarettes
Cured tobacco leaf rolled in paper, ignited and inhaled. That combustion is the actual issue — it produces tar, carbon monoxide, and thousands of other combustion byproducts alongside the nicotine.
Reality check: the WHO and CDC are clear that combustion-based tobacco is the highest-harm nicotine format. Anything smokeless removes that combustion problem, though nicotine addiction risk remains across all formats.
Snus (traditional Swedish)
A moist, ground tobacco-based product portioned into small pouches — same "under the lip" delivery as nicotine pouches, but the pouch contains actual tobacco. Legally sold across Sweden and Norway, but not legally sold as tobacco snus in India under the current regulatory framework.
Practical note for India: what's marketed as "snus" here is usually tobacco-free nicotine pouches (which are the modern equivalent). If you see "Swedish snus" being sold in India, check the label — most are actually nicotine pouches.
Cost in India (per day, similar nicotine)
| Format | Typical daily cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cigarettes | ₹150–300 | 10–20 sticks depending on brand |
| Nicotine pouches (retail) | ₹200–350 | 4–6 pouches/day at typical Indian pricing |
| Nicotine pouches (PouchClub) | ₹100–200 | 4–6 pouches/day at ₹849–899/can — roughly half the market rate |
The verdict
- Discretion + convenience: nicotine pouches win by a mile.
- Availability in India: cigarettes and nicotine pouches only; traditional snus isn't sold as tobacco here.
- Cost: pouches beat cigarettes on rupees-per-nicotine at PouchClub prices.
